- Luka sports facility introduces a vibrant gathering space for residents
A new muti-functional sports facility in the Luka Village was handed over to the community early in 2024.
Part of Impala Rustenburg’s second-generation social and labour plan (SLP), the project was developed to promote sports development and provide a vibrant space for Luka residents to gather and engage in leisure activities. The sports facility was built with modern amenities and recreational facilities — including a soccer field, an athletics track, swimming pool and kiosk — and caters to approximately 17 500 residents.
During its construction, the project created 174 employment opportunities and supported 31 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). It was completed in July 2023 and in October 2023, the new venue celebrated its first milestone by successfully hosting the final soccer and netball tournament of the annual Royal Bafokeng Sports Metshameko Programme.
Rustenburg Local Municipality's Executive Mayor, Sheila Mabale-Huma, expressed her appreciation for private-sector collaboration with the government, saying, “I extend my gratitude to Impala Rustenburg for delivering this transformative project. By empowering the SMMEs involved, Impala contributed to local economic growth and strengthened community resilience. We trust the Luka residents will preserve these facilities and enjoy them for years to come.”
Moses Motlhageng, Chief Executive of the Implats Group’s Western Limb operations, said at the handover event: “These facilities will help foster sporting activities, which cultivate essential life skills. We believe in the transformative power of sport, which offers not just physical activity but also opportunities for personal growth and development. By offering a safe space for recreation, we also hope to provide a place where the community youth can constructively engage and channel their energy.”
