ESD programme positions SMMEs to succeed

Small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) play a critical role within the communities they serve, through job creation and local economic development. Impala’s flagship enterprise and supplier development (ESD) programme seeks to empower local entrepreneurs and strengthens the economic fabric of the surrounding community.

The Impala ESD programme is designed to equip local entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a competitive business environment. The programme offers comprehensive training on business fundamentals such as compliance, governance statutes, financial management and effective marketing strategies. Since its inception, more than 300 SMMEs have successfully completed the programme — many of which have gone on to become key suppliers and service providers in various industries.

One success story belongs to Rakgadi Maithufi, the co-founder and Managing Director of Silver Fish Holdings (SFH). Established in 2017, SFH started as a means of survival and it has evolved over the years into a thriving business that plays a crucial role in supporting other businesses within the community. SFH offers essential back-office support services, including business administration, development and hospitality services.

Rakgadi's journey to becoming a leading entrepreneur was supported by Impala’s ESD programme, which she joined in 2019. She credits the partnership between Impala and Classic Oriental Consultancy for providing transformative training and the opportunities that have allowed her to expand her business beyond Impala's network. Today, SFH services the mining industry and has successfully ventured into the agricultural sector and secured contracts with other corporate entities.

"The programme was a turning point for me and Silver Fish Holdings. It provided the tools and confidence to grow beyond our initial scope and make a real impact in our community. With the right mindset and support, we can achieve anything," says Rakgadi.
