- Supporting SME development at Impala Bafokeng
In 2018, Impala Bafokeng (formerly Royal Bafokeng Platinum), embarked on an inclusive local procurement and enterprise and supplier development strategy to ensure host community companies, which are primarily small and medium enterprises (SMEs), are included in our supply chain.
Various processes and interventions were initiated to support the strategy, including the launch of the Enterprise and Supplier Development Centre in 2018 and the rollout of the enterprise and supplier development (ESD) programmes in 2019. ESD is an effective vehicle to level the playing field for local SMEs by providing business development support, access to infrastructure and solutions to access finance.
An enterprise development programme, known as Propeller, was developed in 2020 to close an identified gap in applicants’ knowledge of the Company’s requirements and processes relating to expressions of interest and tenders. The Propeller programme is delivered online, over 12 weeks, taking 15 participants per group, with three groups per year. To date, we have seen the alumni from this programme venturing out into other businesses and obtaining several purchase orders and contracts.
Meanwhile, supplier development support is offered through two programmes, Compass and Velocity. While both programmes assist host community suppliers, the Compass programme assists suppliers through training, based on identified gaps, and is followed up by one-on-one fortnightly business development coaching sessions. The Velocity programme focuses on suppliers that carry a higher risk for Impala Bafokeng’s operations, and as a result their business development is conducted in a more consultative way, sometimes with mine management.
We regularly review the programmes to ensure they remain relevant, meet their objectives, reach more participants and deliver a unique offering.
Beyond these programmes, Impala Bafokeng accommodates ad hoc sessions, as well as periodic open sessions on pertinent procurement and funding-related topics.
