Family friendly initiatives improve conditions for women in mining

Building a healthy corporate culture, capable of driving business performance and fostering innovation, is dependent on our ability to create a more inclusive and diverse workplace. The women-in-mining forums across our operations work to improve work conditions for our female employees and contractors and address issues related to women’s health and hygiene.

In 2023, Zimplats’ women-in-mining forum established clean rooms to allow new mothers, who have returned from maternity leave, to express and store breast milk in a sanitary environment while at work. New mothers are also given the opportunity to work on surface or leave the workplace early to tend to their newborns.

Impala Rustenburg’s medical services undertook to bring antenatal care in-house to the Impala Rustenburg hospital, eliminating the need for women to take a day off and travel long distances to access these services. The hospital now has a selection of specialist gynaecologists and midwife-trained nurses on staff, and our employees and their dependants can access services without significant disruption to their work and life. Impala also established an on-site baby clinic, which allows mothers with newborns to conveniently access scheduled check-ups and vaccinations.

Meanwhile, Marula’s women-in-mining forum, at a health screening and mental wellness day, handed over 15 mobile underground toilets designed for women. The toilets use minimal water, enable efficient waste disposal and provide hygienic, safe and environmentally friendly underground facilities for our female employees.
