Kearabetswe Mabe’s curiosity about how mechanical and industrial systems work first drew him to engineering – and a bursary from the Implats Group turned that curiosity into a viable career. By lifting the financial burden from his family, the bursary allowed him to focus wholly on his studies and, through early networking opportunities, laid firm foundations for his future at the Group’s Impala Rustenburg operations in the North West province.
Since joining Impala Rustenburg, Kearabetswe has led projects that combine technical complexity and strategic significance. He oversaw the installation of high-capacity compressors to secure a stable compressed-air supply and he spearheaded the refurbishment of key refrigeration plants to keep underground conditions safe. Optimising compressor systems with guide-vane control brought meaningful energy savings and underscored his ability to translate design rigour into operational efficiency.
Managing several high-value, high-risk projects at once ranks among his greatest challenges, requiring calm judgement, data-driven decisions and careful stakeholder alignment against tight timelines. Leading multi-disciplinary teams has accelerated his growth as an engineer and a leader.
Today, Kearabetswe is responsible for the reliability, maintenance and continuous improvement of compressors and refrigeration plants that underpin safe, productive mining. He monitors daily performance, drives capital projects, ensures compliance with engineering standards and pursues energy-efficiency gains that strengthen operational resilience.
The Group has supported his career progression through mentorship, exposure to large-scale projects and technical courses in project management and asset care to create a balanced skill set that blends analytical depth and people-centred leadership.
To aspiring engineers, he offers simple counsel: stay curious, keep your hands on the machinery and never stop learning. Technical mastery matters, but so does communication, teamwork and the willingness to ask questions. Every challenge is a chance to grow and, over time, those experiences forge a professional capable of turning complex problems into lasting solutions.
