Empowering progress through leadership and care

Kelebogile Sebako joined the Implats Group through the Impala Rustenburg graduate development programme after completing her mining studies. One of the defining moments in her early career came with the transition from student to future manager. This shift demanded a new mindset that required her to lead with discipline and composure. She also came to appreciate that, while mining involves technical work, it is ultimately about people – how to communicate, motivate and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with varying perspectives.

In her role as mine overseer, she takes responsibility for the safe and productive operation of a section that requires both strategic oversight and day-to-day execution. Kelebogile ensures that sufficient ground is prepared for mining activity for at least two years in advance, manages operational budgets to secure the resources her teams need and implements the Group's systems and the legal health and safety frameworks to keep people safe. She plays an active role in recognising performance, supporting her teams, and creating a working culture rooted in care and respect.

A passionate advocate for women in mining, Kelebogile believes that self-care, resilience and the ability to balance multiple roles are essential attributes that women bring to leadership. She finds purpose in encouraging other women – often informally and one at a time – to see themselves thriving in the sector. She embraces every opportunity to speak about her work, knowing that her experience can spark inspiration.

Throughout her journey, she has drawn strength from her support system. Her family, friends and two children remain constant sources of motivation, while relationships with women in the industry, including her general manager, have provided insight and inspiration along the way. Her ambition is to see women in mining continue to rise and redefine success for future generations.
